Helen Molasy Memorial Park,

Helen Anne Molasy was my mother. Her maiden name was Kovalick. My mother was a first generation Canadian. Her parents were Slovak from Czechoslovakia. They settled in a home on King Street West (near Hurontario and Dundas). Helen's father came over from Czechoslovakia and worked at the brick yard at Dundas and Cawthra for 10 cents an hour. He brought over to Canada Helen's mother and sister, Mary. While in Mississauga, Joseph, John and Helen (fraternal twins) were born. Helen married Arthur B. Molasy (an immigrant from Poland). They had four children that they raised along Cooksville Creek. Helen, as a first generation Canadian, gained her voice and helped her neighbours understand the implications of straightening the Cooksville Creek and the expropriation of their land. A memorial park was created in Helen Molasy's name. As Helen Molasy's daughter, an elementary school principal, I hope to convey to you as a reader that my mother stepped outside what was considered appropriate for a first generation Canadian to support other newly landed Candians along the Cooksville Creek to make tough decisions around what would be in the community's best interest. I applaud my mother who died from cancer when my daughter (now 27 years), was 6 months of age. I am so thankful that Helen could meet her first granddaughter. Helen was a scout leader when my brothers was young and cared about the community. I hope that you will think about the sacrifices my mother made to help build a lovely park along the lake and creek's edge. I played for many hours along the waterfront and am grateful that many other children can now enjoy the beauty of Lake Ontario in Lakeview, Ontario.
